So this was our first assignment in my Maya Animation class, which this is my second time taking the class. A lot of the people in my class have never done Animation in Maya before so we started off with something simple. It was good considering that I hadn't done maya in quite a while. It was struggle to get back in the swing, that's for sure! But over all I think this came out fairly good.

The second assignment was a short sack pantomime. I wanted to do something fun. This is still in the working stages. It still has timing issues and the ball he's bouncing is still funky. It needs squash and stretch, but Im not doing that till I have the timing all worked out!

So I went to Comic-Con Last week and let me tell you it was nuts! Way over whelming! None the less it was pretty cool to be surrounded by that many super talented people!....makes me realize (again) how much more work I have to do! I got to see tons of cool booths and a few neat-o panels...at least the ones that didn't have crazy loooooong lines.
I would say the coolest things I got to do was see Chris Sanders and talk to Donnachada Daly! It was cool to get to talk to a pro who's taken a gander at my work over on ACME face to face, mono-e- mono! I also bought their books, very exciting!
Anyway, I took a sketch of American Dog that been floating around the internet and cleaned him up in flash! Yep, it's 1:45am and I'm that bored! I left it small because I don't wanna get in trouble!

Semester is over!

Well the semester is finally over and I have time to upload all of my animations.... tears, sweat and blood. All of it still needs work! ALL OF IT! (They play choppy on youtube.)

Bath tub gal: The assignment was that a bomb drops into the room, then your character has to react to it and drop it through the hole in the floor. I didn't get to finish it. These are basically keys and breakdowns, which still need work, there are still a few problems.

Stairs: The assignment was to have a character fall down the stairs.

Pick up test: This was the first test of the semester. Have a character pick up an object. This was hard. All the people in my class has to separately write down a character, an object, and how they got rid of it. So I got a babysitter who picks up a pile of wood and drops it out side of the door.

Emotion change: A character needed to show a change of emotion.

MAYA: It took me so long to do such an uncomplicated, short part. What I wanted to do, the acting was all in my head. Maya, oh maya.....the most pain in the butt program ever, it drove me insane! All of it was learning how to animate in maya, and I'm still not even close, even thought the animation turned out okay. I have a better handle on it than I ever have and have come a long way, but I need more experience. And a huge thanks to Scott Lafluer for helping me out so much! As well as everyone else in my maya class for all of their help too!

I learned a lot this semester...hopefully next semester will be just as productive. I'll be taking flash with Kris, who does the flash work at ghostbot, so I'm excited for that! Vis Dev class, as well as working on animation for a film.

So I have never been plein air painting before, ever, until I started a few weeks ago. It's really fun, but harder than it looks. I'm not the greatest painter to begin with and the added out door elements makes it that much harder. (I even got sunburned last week!) I will admit that I'm getting better with each outing so that's all that matters. I still take way too much time to lay the painting in, too detailed too fast...I'm working on it. Whoo it's been a while...been busy. Anywhoo I fianlly got my sly little mitts on Sketchbook Pro and I Love it! Sketching wise it's so much better than photoshop....color wise I dont think so, but I really dont know the program well enough. I'll have to explore more. So I went to go see Ratatouille twice and going possibly a third time. Pixar has out done it again, it's insane. That movie is so DAMN GOOD.........damn it. I was insipred to draw some quick mice and quickie giraffes. I have more to put up but I have to scan them in, so I'll do that soon. Hope everyone is having a great summer! Fire it up!

I did a small painting of a chef in anticipation of ratatouille. Its acrylic paint on a block of wood that's a magnet. Taking a second look at it through the scanner he has some weird shapes I could have made better, oh well. I gave it to my mommy for her kitchen. <3 Hope every one is having a lovely summer so far.

So my friend Sophorn drew this a while back and he gave to me. I thought I would try my hand at clean up and color, it took me way too long, but so does everything else your learning. I cleaned it up in Illustrator, which I NEVER use and changed some of the shapes of the girl. That was kinda annoying to do. Lastly the color in Photoshop. All in all it was pretty fun, I just need to get quicker at it. (I like the girl-- Chris Sander's-esque).

Its that time of the semester again. No raccoons this time. So here are my character designs for this semesters film. First shot at it (no turn arounds yet). These are pretty rough at the moment. Any suggestions on how to make these better would be GRATEFULLY welcomed. I'm working on the character design, so not set in stone. The only crit so far is to make the guy a bit taller. I need characters that are simple yet appealing and easily animatable in 2D.
I'm interested in vectorizing these guys....havent learned flash yet so that will be far from now.

So heres my tide pool. This was before I turned it in for a final grade, so its even more finished than you see it here and it is still not quite finished (not the greatest picture of it). But my plan is to finish it over the break. Our morning class was made up entirely of people who got into the program, the afternoon class was people who had not. Our class was the first class where all of the people finished and got a grade, about only 6-8 got grades in the afternoon class. Bunny (Prof.) said it was a first. Anyway I'll take a picture of the more finished one soon.

Story Boards!

So here are the story boards from my final film this past sem. I didnt really agree with doing a whole film (30 secs max). As a beginner I think the experience of going through the producion is valueable, but I dont have the know how for acting, all we were doing were drop tests before this. But, all in all I can't complain it was a great experience and I learned tons from it. My story telling is not that strong as of yet, I guess I dont have a big enough pay off. Still fun though. Courtney (Prof.) didn't really like it from the beginning, Dave Chai was "eh, good enough" and by my surprise Bunny really liked it. More so the acting of my characters. I was really surprised. She wants to see them in anouther short. Go figure. Any way I'm going to figure out how to put the film up on youtube but for now just story boards. Have fun!

Well I have finally tried my hand at a photoshop painting. Ive never really done one before. I'll admit it's way easier than actual paint. This little still life took me 2 hours (common Ive never done this before!) I dont think it's half bad. I had fun I'll do more when I find the time. So here are some new ones. Thanks to a co student I saw that the raccoon before would have been a bit harder to animate, which i dont want! So We changed him up a bit. I like him better. But now I have 2 characters, oy vey. ones the mean thin=ish one and the other is the nice and adorable fat-ish one. each look similar, and like a pillow.

So this is my Raccoon for my 20 second film. I've NEVER done character design before, and you know what it was really fun!!
I kept it as simple as possible while trying to keep some fun qualities to it. I think this is something I could keep practicing at because I really liked it. I see some designs for the winter in the future. It's about the only part of film that I have liked so far.
Now I'm to spend all night fixing my animatic. Whoot.

So I havent posted any figure drawing since Sheldons school in LA over the summer. But we are starting figure drawing assignments in Animation, done with the animals ( Im sick of goats/ sheep). So heres what I have so far 35 due on thursday. These are more or less the better ones of the semester so far from SHM figure drawing sessions. I dont know if I should post them to ACME or not they might not be as "finished" as they want to see em'. Any one know?....eh? Oh ya I also threw in a drawing a micah that I did when Im at a horrible angle to the naked person. So I draw people around the room, he's the only one who kinda came out.
Any way here they are for what they are. Hope you like em' and can hate them to give me a crit. :)

So this is the gist of my tide pool.

And those are some eggs that I painted with acrilic paint. The colors are a bit harsher than in real life beacuse of the scaner. These were done in the beginning of the tide pool class.

Ok so here is an idea layout that I have for my tide pool. Im so horrible at this. I think Im just trying to make it perfect when I shouldn't be focusing on that but making a good simple composition. So Im a bit behind. I could use ANY critique right now, the more the better so comment away you guys, I know your out there, I need some ideas. My scene is a coral reef in the red sea, Milne bay, which is in new guinea. My focal is going to be a lion fish (it was going to be a nautilus, damn night creatures)... As is I think the fish is a bit too big for the composition, but I want a large focal point, Im not quite sure where to sick the guy.

P.S. The fish wont be that dark I only made it darker to show that its in the foreground.

So I did sheep this time around. I kinda like how they came out, specific ones anyway. In doing the sheep I realized how much my goats looked like sheep so I'm going to have to try and make more of a distinction next time when I draw the goats. Getting better though, what do you guys think???

So school started yesterday, but I have all my art classes on tues/thurs. Intense. Im taking "Bunny" Carter's 113 (painting) class, should be fun she has a few field trips in mind. And Mr. Chai/ Courtney's Animation class. It looks like i wont have life so I dont know how much Im going to update, maybe some weekends.
But I went out to The Palace of Fine Arts in SF to draw, went to the SF Zoo to draw more animals,Drew at Santana Row (perspective practice, I still suck) and school started so its super busy, people all over the place, so I started drawing them while out in the art quad. Im trying to practice drawing people out in public, not in a set up situation. I guess its going. I need to wrap around the form more. Im also loving the 3rd tone, hiho Tria Pens!

So I went to the zoo today with Corey, it;s the only time I get to go because of work. It was nice, a great day in SF. I was trying to brush up on some animal drawing skills, I haven't done it in a while.
I also was drawing out of the old Preston Blair book( I wasnt exactly following John K.'s lessons. I was just skipping around). Some of them are harder than they look. I still have to take the images in photoshop and see how they match up, how I did. I dont think I did too bad. Anyway school starts in like 3 weeks, whoot!!

John K in SF!

Oh man, I just went to the John K screening in SF. It was the highlight of my summer. I've been watching Ren and Stimpy since it first came on TV and to meet the creator was insane. He's a really nice guy and seems to like his fans. We got to see some of his old work, like The Ripping Friends, and some recent like the new Ren and Stimpy's and the Yogi bear that he did (Hilarious!) and some other clips (TOUCH TIPS!!!)...hahaha....seriously a great experience. I wish he would have gone over some more animation talk but he was there entertaining so it's understandable. I think it would be awesome if he could visit San Jose State, He's something we have never had before and is really kind of different from what we do at school. But yaaaa, it was awesome and Ill leave you with this kick- ass drawing he drew for me. ( It was sooo cool to see him just whip out a drawing, very inspiring!)

So I'm not drawing as often as I want. I know I say that all the time but I work a 35 hour a week job, which I know shouldn't be an excuse.
-Onward to what I have done this time. I have the sweetest little Budgie named Petey. It's amazing how much character these animals can with such a small brain capacity. He picks up sounds like a pro, loves fruit (any red or green foods), and plays fetch. My mom found him when he was young I would have never guessed what a joyful pet they are. So the drawing...I found a cool bag I had and painted on it. I originally started with water color pencils, but they werent contrasting enough, so i switched to paint. I also used the color of the bag to help with the last one.
-Penguins penguins, cute, cute. I tried some character design.
-Cars...I went to go see the end of the great race (it will be on the history channel) I didnt get to draw too much cuz of the fam. I tried to concentrate on the perspective part of it. Awesomely hot cars though.
- Ostriges...I had been to the zoo and later night looked through Peter de seves sketchbook...book and was inspired. I dont do many character design attempts, I kinda like character design, I'm just are not doing very well at it. eh.
- I practiced some perspective by drawing the church mission thing thats down the street from me.

I haven't posted in a while because I've been working and I have family out this week. So I have been busy, busy, but have managed to do some drawing. I realized that I have some major catching up to do still. (But it's not like anyone checks this thing anyway, HA!)....Basically I have just been having fun with some watercolor, ever since I was a kid Ive been fooling around with it and it is probably my favorite paint to mess around with. I have also been doing some hand and foot studied, not long, just quick gestures of what each of them can do, I thought it was kinda fun. I haven't really sat down and studied each extesively really. I think out of this bunch my favorite is the watercolor figures. I was inspired by this artist I came across who does watercolor figures in a similar fashion. His name is Charles Reid if any of you are interested. His other stuff is ok, but I really enjoy his watercolor figures.
But ya this is it for now I should be putting stuff up later. I'm curious to see what other people who got in the program this year are doing for their sketchbooks. I havent seen many people this summer due to being in Marin. Oh well...I guess I'm just really courious to where I stand up against all of them with this sketchbook and if Im on the right track. I like trying new things, and John really liked my 112a sketchbook for that fact, but at the same time I haven't really found something "that I'm good at"....eh....anyway I hope you like the stuff....

Sheldon's L.A

So I went to Sheldon's for week down in L.A, thats why I haven't been posting anything. It was a lot of fun, and I definatly learned a lot. I went down with Renee, Zack, Corey, and Hieu. I must say the rumors are true he is quite different then what he is at school. More one on one time which is what i needed so I feel that I improved a good deal, and have a good direction to go in with figure drawing. I also did some drapery studying (not much) and some animation....whoa I havent done that in a long time. Needless to say it sucked. It was a simple character changing emotion. I plan on working on it over the summer more to improve and shoot it at school. Oh! by the way Im taking 113B and 114 next semester along with a couple GE's (after a long battle with SJSU that I dont want to explain). oh it will be super busy, bring on the non sleep.
Anyway back to L.A....the only thing I wasn't happy about was that we only had a live model once, the rest working from photo's. Which is I guess OK considering that Im still learning, but the live model is better for learning for me at least. Has more relavence. I dont have too many drawings to show for the week, a good chunk but most of the time he was talking, demonstrating, or watching him draw. He's wrting a new book this summer for his advanced class, it basically picks up where the Beginning books leave off, with a few work sheets in it. It's more in depth, anatomy and all that jazz. Even though I cant take the class Im sure Ill buy it. I'll post more artwork tomorrow and maybe some old figure drawings for comparrison. Night!

So here are a couple more pages. Im putting up everything im drawing even if I think its crappy or not. The Junos were cool to draw they are always hanging out in front of my house, you have to draw them quickly though! I then tried to put some character personality in the ones at the bottom. I dont know if it worked or not I dont do that kind of stuff often. I've been reading John K's blog for a long while now and his stuff is inpiring. For these particular birds I was looking at Peter De Seve and how and how he puts character into animals. I LOVE that mans work. His sketches are so....scribbly...for lack of a better word yet it looks like it was meant to be there, every scribble has a purpose and looks so god damn cool.
Then for the still life I was planning on it being monochromatic but i changed it, I think the colors go well (the scann is kinda funny the paper wrinkled up because of the water). I kinda like it, its not horrible, possibly my page so far.
I hope to post something every day so tuned!

Sooo, this is my first post Im just setting this up so I dont have any art work uploaded as of yet. I hope to post lots so I can get a bunch of feed back. Im behind in my summer sketchbook I ordered it from dick blick and didnt get it until a week into June, which sucks. I hope to catch up, I better! I want to improve over the summer, I just got into the program and I hope to impress. Hopefully you guys can help me out to make me better!
